<< Part 10 - Acai Berry Weight Loss Research <<

Now it’s time to see if there is any proof to all the claims of weight loss after a supplemental colon cleanse.

Once again I’m going to try to cut out the “middle man” and show you the studies, instead of just saying “studies have shown”.

You see, I don’t work for a supplement company…

What does that mean?

I’m going to honestly tell you what these supplements can and cannot do for you! I’m not trying to sell you supplements; I’m trying to feed you facts. I hope you’re hungry!

With that being said, let’s see if we can find any studies, involving humans, which show that colon cleansing helps you lose weight.

Colon Cleanse Weight Loss Research

I searched even longer than I had for the acai berries studies and guess what I found?

There hasn’t been a single study done on humans to see if colon cleansing actually does help people lose weight!

Not only that, but there’s been NO scientific proof that colon cleansing detoxifies your body or helps your body run more efficiently.

Imagine that! Another popular supplement with no scientific proof to back its weight loss claims.

But, what about the testimonials?

I’m sure a lot of people are sold on the testimonials of people losing weight while they did a colon cleanse.

Let me explain the process to you.

  • You take the supplement, which probably contains fiber.
  • You’re told to drastically reduce the calories you consume while taking the supplement and to increase your intake of fruits and vegetables.
  • You go to the bathroom a lot and feel great after your cleanse.
  • You praise the miracle colon cleanse supplement.

I’m sorry, but you fell for the supplement company’s magical potion of words and were scammed.

Take the supplement out of the mix and look at the process with some logic.

You upped your intake of fiber with the supplement and with your increased intake of fruits and vegetables. This is going to cause you to have “regular movements” and keep food from staying in you very long. The food, which would normally be in your stomach, intestines or colon isn’t weightless. So right there you just lost some weight.

You drastically reduced your calories. This right here is how we lose weight to begin with! If you burn more calories than you take in you’ll lose weight. If you drop your daily caloric intake too much, you’ll also lose muscle. So sure, you might have lost some fat, but you also might have lost some muscle. But you’re only paying attention to the overall number, right?

Want to go about it a healthier way? Get a good amount of fruits and vegetables in your diet to ensure you’re getting fiber. You can even supplement with fiber if you want, it’s A LOT cheaper than colon cleanse supplements. And, if you want to lose weight, reduce your calories a little bit to lose weight in a way that can be continued consistently; there’s no need for a temporary fix. Add some exercise into the mix and you’ll lose even more weight, because you’ll be burning more calories!

But, what about mucoid plaque?

What about the people holding their brown chains of “colon cleansed” goodies with pride, like a Cracker Jack prize they found in their supplement bottle?

You know what I’m talking about; those pictures of gunk that people passed after taking a colon cleanse supplement. Some people are actually holding it in their hand… that just came out of your butt!

Well you see, the term “mucoid plaque” originated with a guy named Richard Anderson, ND. No, ND doesn’t stand for “Not a Doctor”; it means he has a degree in alternative medicine.

HE sells a supplement called “Arise and Shine”, which is an herbal colon cleanse product. Doesn’t it seem odd that this term and the magical colon cleanse ropes of muck originated from a guy that sells supplements?

The “mucoid plaque” isn’t something that occurs naturally. The only way for you to create your own colon cleanse jump rope is to take a colon cleanse supplement.

Why?

Because most colon cleanse supplements contain a thing called psyllium seed or psyllium seed husk; the same stuff Metamucil contains. If you take psyllium husk, put it in water and let it sit in a cup, guess what happens? It turns into gel! You can slide it out and you’ll have a blob in the shape of your cup.

If you were to mix psyllium husk with some water and then add in some herbs and other things contained in these colon cleanse products… can you imagine what happens?

  • It will make it to your colon…
  • Turn into gel as it waits for you to go to the bathroom…
  • And when you pass it, it comes out in the shape of the insides of your colon!

Tada! Now you have your very own rope of muck to take pictures of and display on the internet.

I’m very disappointed that there were no studies to back the claims of colon cleansing for weight loss or for colon cleansing period. Maybe I’ll make my own mucoid plaque rope to cheer myself up.

Let’s move on.

This is super interesting! Colonics are getting so popular in Hollywood.

Yeah, yehanjeon... I'm not sure why they're so popular when there's no science to back it! Ah well, trends will be trends.

Thank you for a super hub written in a down-to-earth fashion. It is disgusting that nobody done a research about what is going on. Especially colon to be messed about with like that. Funnily, I always had my supecion. To me it didn't make sense. I can't understand how people can run and let something like done without thinking twice; only because somebody says so.

Yeah it's pretty sad Hello, hello,

Once it's on a popular TV show everyone just thinks it's legit without ever looking into it. The people on TV either never researched it themselves or they're paid to lie.

Although I can appreciate your commentary, I have to digress. I am a Cervical Cancer survivor. Almost 9 years ago I was diagnosed with advanced cervical cancer and given a prognosis of 3-6 month. Without surgery, radiation, chemotherapy or drugs, I focused on my body's innate ability to cure and heal itself.

Internal cleansing via colon hydrotherapy and other supplements that supported my body to release waste and toxicity was the foundation of my healing transformation.

Since my transformation I got my PhD in Naturopathic Medicine (ND), and also got my certification in colon hydrotherrapy. I have worked with hundreds of clients, many of whom were challenged with some very serious health issues due to their bowels not moving. The waste in their system was creating a cesspool of toxicity.

Although diet does have a lot to do with how the body processes, so much of the foods we eat is not effectively converted by the body, especially when it comes to fast foods, processed foods, lack of alkaline water intake. There is more to healing than just diet.

The AMA / FDA is not going to necessarily support holistic therapies as they are not profiting from them (at least not right now anyway). So of course there is going to be a lot of debunking and theory conspiracies, etc. etc. etc....

You spend everyday cleaning the outside of your body, right? Why not clean the inside? You brush your teeth everyday, at least twice a day. Your colon is just the other end of the same tube, yet people go an entire lifetime and never cleanse.

There is a method to the madness of cleansing. This just comes from my own humble personal experience.

Thanx again for sharing!

Thank you for your story Madison, I'm not quite sold on the benefits of colon cleansing but perhaps you can change that.

You seem to have a good background, so maybe you could perform the first study to show the benefits of colon cleansing? I would love to see a true study done on this, especially if it deals with weight loss. But I'd accept any study that truly shows the benefits of colon cleansing.

And yes, I do cleanse my colon everday.. at least twice. I eat a balanced diet and am quite regular ;). Right now I'll stick to my natural methods.

Oh... Thank you, thank you, thank you! If I hear one more idiot tell me that colon cleansing cleans out pounds of waste, and John Wayne had POUNDS of waste in his colon at autopsy (which he never had an autopsy!), I swear I'll strangle them.

Yes, keeping the motor running clean can clearly have benefits. For me, even bacterial flora is something that I pay very careful attention to-- mostly because of the assimilation of proteins (amino acids).

I believe the liver is a far too ignored part of this puzzle. With it's role in detoxifying, lipid metabolism, enzymes, even hormone production (slightly longer path, sorry), it's clearly a very important part of our health.

Again, as you say, eating a balanced diet is the key. Many new studies support much of what we've believed about vegetables for years. Not only are they high in fiber and many minerals, but science suggests that some of the phytochemicals/phytosterols also have benefits.

Thank you, too, Madison. This has the making of a very productive discussion.

Yeah, joecseko, I don't buy into it at all! And as of right now I'm on a very balanced, VERY clean diet as I'm testing out a friend's bodybuilding workout.. I get plenty of vegetables, I even take a powdered greens supplement which is very complete and actually sweet tasting by Barlean's.

Balanced diet. Nearly an oxymoron. Everyone wants some magical cure in a drink, capsule or pill. I do use supplements, but not indiscriminately. Food has been around forever. Too many people dismiss the value of WHOLE foods (and I'm not some whole food freak- but processing destroys many benefits).

Who knows? I could be wrong, but I doubt it :-)

Oh trust me Joe, I don't take supplements often at all... just for testing out this workout because it came with meal plans and supplement suggestions so I'm going to do it as is to be sure it works before I promote it.

Normally all I take in is whole foods, but I was really surprised how well that greens supplement went down.

I'm with you brother! I'm all about organic foods, grass-fed meats and so on... I stay away from supplements as much as possible. I'm only on this for 7 weeks because that's how long the workout is set up... then I'm onto a MMA workout I designed and back to my normal, healthy eating without supplements.

And when I eat my normal balanced "diet" I don't mean a temporary diet... I just mean how I eat. A good diet shouldn't be a temporary thing and no magical pill works without good food and exercise.

If you read this whole series of articles you'll see how I feel about magical pills.
