If you're looking for something to do today then I hope you don't have a weak stomach because it's National Chocolate Covered Insects Day!

Come on... you can do it!

Let's get right into celebrating National Chocolate Covered Insects Day!

Why is this a holiday?

Honestly, I really have no idea... Maybe it's because people like to be brave and munch on these hard-shelled sources of protein in front of their friends. Maybe people like to trick their friends into eating them. Or maybe people just need to realize that eating an insect isn't that bad at all, when it's covered in chocolate. But either way, this little treat often pops up into the minds of many and today is the day to do more than just think about it... it's time to eat some!

Did you know that there is an actual word for eating insects? It's called entomophagy and people are eating these little babies all over the world! In fact, only 20% of the world's nations opt out of this culinary act. There are over 1,000 different types of insects that end up in human stomachs, but crickets and grasshoppers might be the first insects that pop into your mind. Beetles, mealworms and caterpillars get eaten too though.

But why do people do it? Well, other than it being an interesting thing to eat, you can get a good source of protein, vitamins, minerals and fat out of eating insects. Want some calcium? Then pop some crickets in your mouth! Need some protein? Opt for some ants! Feeling a little low on iron? Swallow some termites! And you know, you might be able to skip that multivitamin if you can get your hands on a bunch of giant silkworm moth larvae.

So who's with me?

How to Celebrate

So, how can you celebrate?

Well, if you're lucky, you might have street vendors serving up chocolate-covered insects on the regular. And you might be able to find them in chocolate shops or novelty shops near you. So really, you just have to hunt a little bit if you want to find them locally. But of course, you can always find them online!

There is another way for you to get your treats though... catch them yourself! But if you're going to catch them yourself, then I recommend you look for your insects far away from any fields of crops or someone's garden. People use pesticides and herbicides and you don't want insects full of that crap! So make sure you're in a nice, natural area with no farming or gardening going on and make sure you know what type of insects are actually safe to eat. Then you just want to cook them up, cover them in chocolate and enjoy!

But come on... you have to have a little fun with them, don't you? How many people do you think you could trick into eating them and then get them to admit that it was good? Now how many of them do you think will try to hit you or chase after you when you tell them they just ate an insect? Yeah, you might just want to share them with others who actually want to find out what it's like to eat a chocolate covered insect!

Have a great day and enjoy your crunchables!

I'm going to celebrate by sweeping the spider webs from my front walkway. You're on your own brave soul!

Bendo13, I'll split some with you. I'll take the chocolate you take the bugs. Cool video.

Ha, who thinks up these national days? This title caught my attention because I have eaten chocolate covered insects. On my 8th grade field trip we went to the Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago and they sold them in the museum store. I wasn't quite as brave as some others, but did eat some chocolate covered ants! So, I guess I'm your first fellow brupid hubber! Enjoy the rest of your delicacies.

you people... we all eat insects everyday... the USDA has limits on how many insects can be in food. If you ask me those limits are kinda high... so go on... eat that cake, pasta, sausage... cause you are chowing down on little bitty insect parts.... At least Bendo offered you some with chocolate... you squeamish people... you've eaten more bugs then you can count!

Bendo: Great hub... Its right up my ally... I'll have a chocolate covered grasshopper... the ants taste kinda funny to me...

Awesome, rebekahELLE... brupids unite!

Well, let's hope I make it through the night, Jlava73!

Nice, homesteadbound... let me know what they think!

You suuuuure, rosettaartist1?

Oh, I don't doubt that one bit, davenmidtown! It's kind of hard to keep insects out of the food when they mass produce it. I welcome you to brupidhood!

I see you weren't hesitant to celebrate this holiday. I think I'll stick with not knowing whether I'm eating insects, chocolate or no chocolate.

Great hub, as always. I'm looking forward to the next holiday.

Okay now paying almost 50 bucks for them I don't know about that...

I have tried chocolate covered ants, crickets, and grasshoppers, this was Mexico and required dubious amounts of tequila. I woke up with some kind of insect leg stuck in my teeth. Yum.

Oh videos are a lot easier and much more fun than writing, davenmidtown... at least in my mind! Things are moving along slowly but I can give you one tip... if you really want to get a ton of subscribers you need to do joint ventures with people on there that have a lot of followers. For instance, I got an idea for my chocolate video from a girl that has hundreds of thousands of subscribers... so I mentioned her in my video and at the end told them to go look at her video, then I messaged her on one of her profiles and told her to check out the video, that I had gotten the idea from her and had told her in a comment on a video that I was going to make them. She saw it, saw I was promoting her and she subscribed to me and gave the video a thumbs up... Then on her profile, that thumbs up was visible for like 5 days - a backlink right to my video - and that video is my most viewed video and it got me over 20 subscribers. That's how people get big on there - you have to piggyback!

Haha, yeah Karry... I already knew what insect eating was all about from my lollipop video, so I figured this couldn't be much worse! Happy to have you following along!

Oh, that's for 24 of the boxes I showed in the video, jenubouka... that'd be more for if you wanted to have a big group of people eat them. Go directly to their site and you can buy one box at a time! That sounds like a wonderful way to wake up haha.

Oh it wasn't too bad, AmaTainted... I'm good on eating bugs for a while now though haha.
