If you're looking for something to do today then get ready to make your nose smile because it's Fragrance Day!

Surround yourself in the best smelling scents today!

Let's get right into celebrating Fragrance Day!

Why is this a holiday?

Do you enjoy smelling bad? I didn't think so! Would you like to go back to the times where we didn't have colognes, perfumes, deodorants and scented soaps? Probably not, huh? So THAT is why we are celebrating fragrances today!

Some people call them perfumes and others generalize perfumes that are made up of 2% to 5% of essential oils and call them a cologne, which is normally how it's marketed to men. But a perfume is a mixture of a wide variety of essential oils and other aromatic compounds to produce scents that are appealing to our nose.

The word perfume actually comes from the Latin words "per fumus" which means through smoke. And the act of using perfumes was brought about in the times of ancient Egypt Mesopotamia. So you can see why we're so good at perfected fragrances today; we've been doing it for quite some time!

A perfume has three main parts to it. It has the top or head notes which you can smell right away but they evaporate quickly. The top notes are what a lot of people base their decision on when deciding if they like a perfume enough to buy it. Then you have the middle or heart notes which is what you start to smell once the top notes fade away. And lastly you have the base notes which you don't really smell until about a half hour after you've applied it. The middle and base notes are really what most people are going to smell when you're wearing it around them.

So break out your perfumes or "colognes" and wait for the compliments on how good you smell today.

How to Celebrate

So how can you celebrate today?

Well, grab your favorite bottle of fragrance and put some on your neck, wrists and the middle of your shirt.  It's a simple celebration that almost anyone around you will enjoy as the scent creeps into their nose.  BUT don't put on too much!  You don't want to give someone a headache from the scent you're wearing, so only use a spray or two if you can.

Or you could go to the store and buy a bottle of perfume or cologne that you've wanted for a while.  Yep, I'm giving you an excuse to splurge a little bit today!  And if anyone complains that you're spending money that you shouldn't be just tell them to smell it and then look them in the eye and say, "Come on... it was worth it!"

You could even go to the mall and go from store to store sniffing the tester bottles they have out on display.  Take your nostrils on an adventure to find some new fragrances that really do something special for you.  The people behind the counter will always have plenty to tell you about the fragrances too!

Regardless of what you decide to do today, I hope you smell wonderful!

Dude, I'm glad yer not on the smellavision here.

You're supposed to put it on your skin and it mixes with your body chemicals. I don't know if it's "official" when you put it on your shirt like that. LOL

Okay, what am I going to do to celebrate fragrance day? I'm gonna spread stench around all over. Hey, it's a fragrance. (Nobody said it had to be a GOOD fragrance.)

But, no, wait, I've missed it for this year. It's now March 22.

:-(( Too bad. Gotta wait for next year's Fragrance Day.

Thanks. This is a great hub.

Haha guess you're free to smell as you please until next year, then you can raise the scent level!

I knew I was going to put on a lot of different ones, Huntgoddess... and I needed to be able to smell them myself. I could have done one on each wrist but I dunno how I'd smell my neck haha... the fingertips count though!

I'm not sure I'd know how to pronounce that either, revmjm! A lot of the colognes I look for I end up looking up on YouTube to see how other people say them haha.

You're welcome, Hello, hello,... it's interesting how complex making a fragrance really can be!
