How to Make Your Site One of the Most Visited Websites

By Bendo13

If you're wondering how you can increase the traffic to your site and become one of the most visited websites then you need to implement at least two of these methods.

I'm about to show you a free method and two paid methods that bring traffic to my sites each and every day.

By the end of this article you will be ready to open the flood gates and let the traffic pour in.

A Free Method for Traffic

First of all let's start out with something that you can do for free to bring in a good amount of traffic. What is the method? Well, it's simply posting online classified ads. The site I use is Craigslist and it's probably one of the best out there for this method. It gets a ton of traffic from people looking for things, it's free to post to (depending on the type of post) and it's broken down locally.

What you'll want to do is first find a category on Craigslist that really fits what your site has to offer. On a few of my sites, I give away free information that teaches people different things. So I usually post in the "lessons & tutoring" section under the "services offered" category. And once you figure out your category then you can start writing up a few different classified ads.

You want to write out at least 3 different ads that focus on different solutions you offer on your site to common problems people have. So if you have a fitness site, one ad could be about running, one could be about weight loss and one could be about building muscle. And at the end of each ad you want to tell them to go to your site for more information and then provide them with a link. You can then post 3 ads in your particular section a day, but if you only have 3 ads then you can only really post every other day. And if I were you, I wouldn't stick to just one area; I'd cycle through each and every location from the top down with each new ad. These ads usually stay up for about a month (some big cities and possibly certain sections only allow a week), so you'll end up with a ton of links all over their site for different locations.

How to Advertise on One of the Most Visited Websites

Now let's take a look at a method that does cost a little bit of money, but you'll be advertising on one of the most visited websites online today! Can you guess what site I'm talking about? That's right... Facebook! Everyone seems to be on this site and you want to tap into that flow of traffic. But you're going to do it through a Fan Page. So set up a Page for your website with a little information about your site along with a link to your site in the info. And be sure to use an eye-catching picture that really sums up your site.

Now what you'll want to do is get some "fans", which you can start out doing by telling some of your friends to "like" your page. But the real amount of fans are going to come from the ad you create. Facebook will even tell you on your Fan Page to create an ad. So what you'll want to do is pick out a few descriptive headlines, pictures and descriptions. You're going to have to test out ads two at a time so that you can split test them against each other to see which ad is going to get you more fans. So you'll start out with two identical ads, but only one aspect will be different, like the headline. You test two headlines, pick the winner and then test the winner against another headline until you've tested them all. When you find a good headline then you can move onto testing the pictures and so on.

And to really make this work you want to target your specific demographic. Who is your target market? You can really narrow it down with Facebook ads! You can target by gender, age, location, interests and so on. And another thing you'll want to do is select that you only want your ads visible to people who haven't already "liked" your Fan Page. It doesn't make sense to advertise to people who are already fans, right? Plus, when you're able to, you want to set it to only advertise to people who are friends of your fans. That way, when they see your ad, they'll see that a few of their friends also like what you're advertising, so they're more likely to check it out. And let's not forget that when someone "likes" your page ALL their friends see that they did that and they might click the like button too! FREE viral likes! Then all you need to do is post interesting things about your niche on your Fan Page wall from time to time and occassionally pop a link in there to your site.

Advanced Method for Traffic

And in closing, let's talk about an advanced method for getting traffic. It's advanced because there's a bit of a learning curve and if you do it wrong you could lose a lot of money. This method is called pay per click advertising; like Google Adwords. These are the little ads next to the search engine results that relate directly to what you just searched for. If you really want to learn the ins and outs of Adwords then I recommend you check out The Definitive Guide to Google Adwords by Perry Marshall.

But I'll give you the basics on what you want to do. First you need to find keywords that are "buyer keywords", which get a decent amount of monthly searches and have low competition. A buyer keyword just means that it's something someone would type into a search engine if they're getting ready to buy something. You want this type of person to see your ad because you might be marketing what they want to buy. So if you have a pet store then you want to bid on a keyword like "best dog leashes" instead of a keyword like "pictures of dogs". You can use tools like MSN's Online Commercial Intention tool to help you decide if it's a buyer keyword or not.

And you can use Google's Keyword Tool to see how many times people search with your particular keyword in a month. I'd aim for at least 1,000 searches a month so that there's a good chance of you getting traffic every single day. The keyword tool will also show you a green bar that tells you how much competition that keyword has. You want low competition keywords so that you don't have to pay a lot per click. Once you have your keywords you'll have to split test ads just like you do with Facebook ads to figure out which ad copy works best.

These are three proven ways to really boost your website's traffic. So start advertising on Craigslist, Facebook and Adwords and who knows, maybe you'll end up having one of the most visited websites online. Now you can let the traffic pour in!

I hesitated to open this hub because I thought, 'What more can there be to say about getting traffic to hubs/web sites', but you have managed to flag up a few new ideas. I also like the free ad idea. When I have placed genuine items for sale I have noticed they perform well in the search engines. Must set time aside to tackle the whole thing in a professional manner. Many thanks for the push forward. (No luck with adwords and I do have a fb page, lestroischenes, if anyone wants to 'like' me)

Yeah I've been using Craigslist for that purpose for years now, Brett... it's really handy! Hope you find success with it.

I'm glad I could give you a few new ideas, Les Trois Chenes! It can be tricky to master the art of Adwords but that difinitive guide really helped me get started.

And with proper testing on your Facebook ads you can really bring in daily "likes" for cheap. I pay $1 a day (yep, only a dollar) for highly targeted ads and I end up with sometimes 10 likes in a day from that dollar.. which of course can compound through viral "liking"

Thank you so much for this very easy to understand and useful hub. I have been trying to figure out the entire make money with hubs thing and honestly much of it was just over my head. Your hub was clear concise and to the point without being overloaded with a lot of the technical terms newbies like me don't understand.

Bendo13 profile image

Bendo13 Hub Author 11 months ago

Yeah they've grown quite a bit The Ghostwriter, now you can test out the CL waters!

You can definitely market your service in those ways LINC... go on craigslist and click "post to classifieds" then select "service offered" and then select "therapeudic services". On Facebook you can set up a Page for your service and with Adwords you can set up an ad that directs to your website (if you have one). And if you want to promote a book on Amazon then go here: http://hubpages.com/faq/#amazon to make sure you're all set up then just copy and paste the URL in of that exact book when using the "select exact products" option for the Amazon capsule.

You're welcome wendi_w! I'm glad my writing comes off as easy to read.. I know other people make things a bit confusing!

Haha thank melbel! It was my first 100 on an individual hub too!

Yes, Roberto that could work but if you want them to come to a place you can't advertise in your local area... you'd have to find other places with great populations that travel often.

mariasial, I would say the best way to do that is to write about something that almost everyone wants to read but that no one is writing about or is writing about in the wrong way or in a completely different light that you want to show it in. In other words, it takes a little testing and fine tuning!

Thanks ankandhk! I'm glad I get my message across easily and that you find it beneficial!

I agree with most of what was said. Yes, facebook is wonderful plus it can target a very specific customer. Plus, all the major search engines, Google, Bing, Yahoo, plus the thousand of others, all scan facebook for content. Craigslist is a bit more tricky. You have to consider that there are a lot of scammers on craigslist. Plus, Google doesn't really scan listings anymore. I notice a huge decline. Hubs like this one are fantastic tool for marketing. Great article and lots to think about. I would like to say that the internet is not constant, changes daily, and so do the algorithms, "the way search engines search"

Bendo13 profile image

Bendo13 Hub Author 11 months ago

Thanks nikashi_designs! Things do change often online but with CL your links will last only about a month, maybe a month and a half each time you post them. So you wouldn't really be using it for backlinks as much as you would for active traffic. The readers on CL are often looking for something and are click happy. So, yes there are spammers... but you're not going to be one of them! You're going to provide true content to people who are seeking it.

Web World Watcher profile image

Web World Watcher 11 months ago

I'm sure you know that pay per click advertising such as this is not the only way to generate traffic to your site. In fact ppc as a traffic source is much less stable than an overall effective SEO campaign for improvement of your sites organic web rankings. I use traditional link building and onsite optimization for targeted niche searches and I've found that it is one of the most effective practices in order to get good search visibility. But these methods work as well.

Bendo13 profile image

Bendo13 Hub Author 11 months ago

Yeah Web World Watcher, it's best to optimize your pages for the search engines before you start any type of advertising. SEO is slower though, since it takes a while to get indexed, your backlinks to be found and so on... and even then you might get sandboxed just to make sure your site is legit.

I think a combination of ads and SEO is the best practice so that you get a blend of traffic from search engines as well as from sites people are already on.

Web World Watcher profile image

Web World Watcher 11 months ago

That's exactly my position. A nice broad stroke to cover all your bases. I agree that SEO is very time consuming and not overnight...that's what makes it so effective i guess.

Yeah meaavash, I didn't claim to make up these methods I just combined 3 methods of advertising that get me consistent traffic into one place. That way people who don't know about them or aren't using them can put them all into play and see a jump in their traffic that stays there.

Glad I could help, suziecat7!

It can be pretty handy, Barbara! If you just take a few minutes every other day to copy and paste your ads you'll have a permanent cycle of links on Craigslist. I just searched a title from one of my ads and there are 10 different links but some aren't even from Craigslist... some people just swiped my ad to add content to their site... Hey, I'll take free traffic!

Ah, MisterTickle I dabbled in those for a little and soon realized the traffic is worthless... almost everyone on there just wants to advertise their own site and doesn't pay attention to the sites that they have to browse. How do I know... well, because I'd just let it browse and do other things... I mean what do YOU do when you surf to get credits for traffic? If I were you I'd test out one of these methods above and get some better quality traffic.

Yeah it can work if you put your ad in the right category, have good copy and an obvious call to action. Try it out and see how it works for you, anemometers.

I enjoyed the article. I especially like when you said "These ads usually stay up for about a month, so you'll end up with a ton of links all over their site for different locations."

I imagine when you wrote this article at that time Craigslist ads would remain up for about a month. I've notice lately the ads are only up for 7 days.

Still a great way to drive traffic.

nikashi_designs profile image

nikashi_designs Level 4 Commenter 11 months ago

Flatstomach is correct, seven days, but you can run two or three ads slightly different. Staggering them. When they expire you can relist without having to type in everything. Craigslist has its purpose, just not sure it's the right kind of traffic. Depends on your product or service.

Bendo13 profile image

Bendo13 Hub Author 11 months ago

flatstomach, I just wrote this the other day. The length of time your ads stay up depends on the location you choose and possibly the section you choose to post in. I've noticed that the really big cities only allow your ads up for a week, probably because so many people post ads and they'd be lost in the madness anyway. But the majority of places you can post on Craigslist still allow your ad to stay up for 30-45 days, at least in the sections I've been posting in.

I just checked my Craigslist account to confirm this and I still have active ads up from May 2nd, 4th, 9th, 11th and on and on. I post in the services offered section and I post ALL over Craigslist, not just one location. I cycle through them all eventually, all the English speaking ones. I post 3 a day, every other day and each different ad gets its own location.

Yes nikashi_designs it's best if you have a list of different ads, but you have to wait 2 days before you can post the same exact ad again. I actually have 20+ different ads I use to promote 4 different pages of mine. I just cycle through them.

nikashi_designs profile image

nikashi_designs Level 4 Commenter 11 months ago

Excellent, thanks will go thru it now. The ads I ran were only good for seven days. Obviously doing something wrong.

Bendo13 profile image

Bendo13 Hub Author 11 months ago

I wouldn't say you were doing something wrong, nikashi_designs... you might have just been posting in really populated areas, or perhaps the section you post in only allows short-lived ads.

Also, I only ever post when I'm logged into my account.

Thanks khmohsin, glad you like it! I'm not sure what causes hub scores to rise and fall really, as I don't work for HubPages I can just guess.

The overall score you see on your profile seems to go up when you post hubs, get traffic, get comments, comment back, post in forums, answer questions and so on. The people with 100's do all that = are the most active. And I think the score is delayed so they can calculate all the old info and figure out where you're at.

The individual hub probably goes up from traffic, how long people stay on your hub, if they comment, if they rate it up or down, and if they mark it as useful or any of the other ones. Same thing... the hubs with the most activity on them get 100s.

Your scores could also be weighted against other hubs or hubbers... So you'd have to be one of the top 10 or so most active people on the site to be a 100.. but someone might be a little more active than you for half a day so you get knocked down. Same thing with hubs - you could be the most active in a category but then another hub gets a ton of activity and you get bumped.

These are all just assumptions though... someone at HubPages would have to verify.

Great Hub and Comments to follow. Remember, what works on Craig's List, also works for other free classified accounts out there. Nearly every town and every city has their own classified ads offered for free. Craig's list maybe the most popular, but they're not all there is.

Another great source most of us have available to us is "FAMILY"! Tell your family about your Writing, especially if you are writing family stories they might want to read or have info to add.

The Key to all your efforts is Stick-to-itiveness! If you are just beginning your efforts towards becoming a Freelance writer, treat this as you would any new job. It takes time, it takes TIME, to become the expert you want to be, that can do what you do with your eyes closed. So, be patient, and avoid the Naysayers at all costs.

Yeah Ken, someone mentioned that and it's very true... these ads can go anywhere! And hey... want to be bold? Does your newspaper still offer free ads ;) And yes, tell your friends and family to read up because they'll end up sharing your work just because they know you! Stick to it as you say and anything is possible... even if you suck at it for months!

Ok - So say I'm a rookie, I guess I don't understand what the point is, if you're just getting traffic to your site that is a free service - Can you explain that to me? I understand your methods of creating traffic definitely. Just what's the point if they're just sort of going to your page then leaving it for some, others going there to obtain free info, etc... How do you actually make money from that? Haha, thanks Ben

Adsense and revenue sharing from the website hosting your blog. The more people you bring to view their ads the more money they make...the more money you make. you also can get click through traffic money from Amazon.

Well if you don't offer anything for sale on your site you can always add Google ads to your site, or affiliate ads from sites like Commission Junction... there are a lot of options to make money from your traffic. You just have to be sure that anything you add to your site to make money actually benefits your reader.

very informative.

I agree with the ads on Craigslist, and I would add Kijiji as well, since it has given me some great traffic to some other side projects I have done with some organizations. Basically, posting with any magazine, newspaper and other classifieds around the area of interest is a good idea.

I particularly liked the "test ads by two" tip. I really never thought f it before. Having read this, I now agree that it makes sense and could help a bunch.

Very useful!

Bendo13 profile image

Bendo13 Hub Author 9 months ago

Yeah I tried Kijiji before and they didn't like my ads there, but it is an option varonny! Also, your newspaper probably gives you something like 3 lines for 3 days for free, so if you really want to test out some offline marketing then that's an option too.

Yeah, splittesting will help you build the best ad possible. You'll boost your click through rate and from then on out all your advertising efforts will bring in more profit than before.

Hi Bendo - I know you recommended placing an ad on craigslist but I heard this can be dangerous if you use google adsense. I've read about people gettin banned from adsense by using craigslist as a traffic source. According to the adsense terms of service your not allowed to promote your websites on these classified ads types of websites not meant for website promotion. Any experience with this?

Bendo13 profile image

Bendo13 Hub Author 9 months ago

Hmmm that might be an issue, Jennie Demario... I haven't directed traffic to any site with AdSense on it through Craigslist and if it's in the terms then I would avoid it! Instead direct them to a landing page that doesn't have your Google ads on it and then that page can link them to anywhere you want.

So it will be a gateway page to get your point across and then if you feel like it that page can direct them to other pages that do have Google ads.

CloudExplorer profile image

CloudExplorer Level 8 Commenter 9 months ago

I like the info your providing, but it really takes a great deal of efforts to get noticed on the web in general, Search engine optimization is definitely one major way to make the magic happen. What many people fail to realize is, budgeting and how you network with people makes all the difference for sure.

You must establish relationships online via multiple social networking sites, because people tend to shy away from individuals who claim to have the internet location to go to, while the person has no clue who you are, or what your truly into. This takes hard work & dedication as well, it's surely not an easy task to make your web presence felt, no way at all.

The more sites your web profile & site location shows up, the more higher ranking the search engines will begin to push it up & don't forget your meta tags.

Don't overdo things too quickly, Mypath... if they notice you're posting the same things too often they'll start making you confirm your posts through your phone each time you post and then they'll just ghost your posts... you'll think they are all live but in fact they never are shown to the public.

Post naturally and try not to come off like you're advertising... look at the ads that are already on there and model yours after them. You want to be posting the type of classified ad that people will respond to, not the ones that they know are ads.

Hey Bendo, sorry I'm late to the Hub. As always, good stuff. Would you please explain what you mean here.."You can then post 3 ads in your particular section a day, but if you only have 3 ads then you can only really post every other day. And if I were you, I wouldn't stick to just one area; I'd cycle through each and every location from the top down with each new ad." It's a little tangled up for me.

Thanks:)

Bendo13 profile image

Bendo13 Hub Author 3 months ago

Hey frugalfamily,

They only allow you to post three posts per day in one section... so if you post in lessons and tutoring, you can only post in that section three times in one day, then you have to wait.

BUT you have to wait 2 days before you can post the same exact ad over again - so if you only have 3 different ads written up, you'll have to wait 2 days before you can post again. It'd probably be better to write up 6 to 9 different ads, so you don't run into that problem.

And it's a classified ads site, so there are pages for locations all across the globe... so you can post one ad in Philadelphia, then another version of the ad in Houston and so on. That way you hit up a few locations a day.

But like I said you don't want to come off as an advertiser and you don't want to overdo it or they'll "ghost" your ads and no one will really be seeing them. You'll know you're getting close to being ghosted when you have to do call verification for everytime you want to post that day.

The call verification is something they do sometimes to make sure you're not a spammer... you put in a phone number, it's then linked to your account (you can only use that phone number for that account), and they have an automated system call you with a pass code you have to type in.

If you're not posting too often and too much like an advertiser then you won't have to do call verification that often.
